The Value of My Sanity

Preview | Posted on 14 August 2008 by claudia

As you might have read in our July issue, The Value of My Sanity is due for its major debut at The Annexe on Friday, 22 August at 8pm. It's a 30-minute shortie about a man’s adverse fall from grace, into the comforting void of insanity. We managed to catch up with Zachary Ong, the film's producer in the summation of ten questions:

1. How did the idea for The Value of My Sanity come into place?

During the moment when we had to decide what sort of film to make, we had a mutual agreement within the team to tell a story that everyone can relate to especially young adults living in the city. We wanted to make a film that can bring about awareness or awakening in people because we believe that film is a powerful medium to cause this.

This was a tremendously dynamic and fulfilling exercise for each of us having that all of us come from distinct creative backgrounds (photography, graphic design, architecture, writing). Our (sometimes insane) obsession towards quality and perfection is what drives us to push not only individual boundaries but also our creativity.

The amazing thing about the Goat Team is that everyone is free to have a say in any area of expertise regardless of skills and experiences. This ensures that we cover every aspect fully in the commitment of producing good work.

2. How did these ideas materialise?
Late hours brainstorming and lots of Starbucks and Coffee Bean coffee really helped. :)

3. How does it feel to have accomplished so much at such a young age?
We believe anyone and everyone can achieve anything they want, if you have the vision and commitment for it regardless of age.

4. Why create a short film over a feature-length movie?
The stories we wanted to tell in our films have a flavour of its own and short films are the best approach to telling these stories. Ultimately our path is to make a feature-length film, with short films on the side.

5. How was the directorial process, working with actors older than you? Was it trying at times?
The directorial process was definitely a learning curve for all of us. Fortunately the actors we worked with were talented and versatile and they knew exactly what we wanted from the get go.

6. Where do you expect this film to go, what do you hope it will accomplish, and where do you plan to release the film?
Bottom line is we wanted to tell a story the way we see it in our minds. But winning a string of awards won't hurt. :) The film has reached Japan and soon to be in some parts of the United States. Our official local screening will be on the 22nd August. Please visit www.thevalueofmysanity.com for more details about the event.

7. What was the best experience in the film making process for this movie?
As a producer, the best experience is witnessing the team members consistently going beyond their own boundaries and also seeing the fruit of labour after months of work.

8. What was the worst?
Can't think of any. The entire process is like a rollercoaster ride. There are ups and downs and the key is to never get out of the ride until it's over.

9. What was the funniest?
Lesly Leon (our first AC) thinks we act like a uni-mind borg. I find it quite funny.

10. You've got Yuna, Otam and Estrella playing at your launch. How does inviting bands to perform tie in with the movie?
Each singer/songwriter has their song in the film. Yuna andOtam's songs perfectly emulate the mood we wanted to portray in the film. They both wrote and composed an original song specifically for the film ('Peer Pressure' and 'Ku Telan Rasa' respectively) and Estrella was graceful enough to have us use their song 'Heaven' from their current album. They are amazingly talented people. Each will perform these songs plus their all time favourites. The event on the 22nd August is meant to be an intimate and exclusive performance, thus the limited seats. We urge everyone to RSVP as soon as they can by emailing their name, phone number and number of seats to goatfilmsproductionsATgmail.com
