Beauty and the Beast

Preview | Posted on 02 June 2008 by julian

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast was officially released in 1991, with its subsequent Broadway following opening a decade ago. Taking into consideration the generational change in audiences and not to mention the escalation in ticket prices, it has never lost its luster. For a tale as old as time, while Beauty and the Beast has lost its obvious freshness, it still, very firmly holds our hearts that it has captured at bonjour.

Well, get ready to be captivated once again - the good people at CIMB Bank are proud to present the world-class, multi-award winning, record-breaking production on a Malaysian stage! Based on Disney’s original animated movie, the musical will weave a traditional take on the classic fairy tale that revolves around a rather cerebral small-town girl, Belle, who is taken prisoner by one incredibly reclusive Beast. Within the confinement of his castle, embark on their journey as they discover the true meaning of an unconditional love and friendship alongside the guidance of Beast’s enchanted household objects of servants. Then get rudely interrupted by the vain, arrogant and ridiculously good-looking huntsman Gaston, in his desperate vying for Belle’s affections. And in between, laugh, cry, clap your hands, and sing-a-long to your childhood memories, including Belle, Gaston, Be Our Guest, Something There and Beauty and the Beast.

The staging of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast – The Broadway Musical will undoubtedly be nothing short of spectacular, with its accompaniment of stunning costumes, very special effects and extravagant sets exuding with that trademark Disney magic. Itching to get your tickets already? By all means, be our guest.

Overall the musical is good and worth to watch, however I have the following comments. Hopefully it can be improved and worth for my 2nd visit :

TO THE MUSICAL
1. It has follow the animated B&B very closely.

2. The costume, back ground and the effects including lighting, firework, "explosion", wood cutting machine.. VERY VERY NICE JOB !!! (except the dinning table & chair - doesnt look grand at all, salt & pepper & other dinning items- difficult to identify)

3. There are some additional songs added, however.. not to my interest and I think these newly added scenes has wasted much time that caused the ending so rush.

4. The classic scenes such as when Belle leaving, when Beast died are so rush, brief and emotionless. Normally these 2 scenes I will cry when i watch the animation, but this one... i haven't even feel the sadness the scene has ended, I haven't even get into the mood, the beast is dead and alive and transformed and kissed the Belle and ended. The whole musical took more than 2 and half hour, but these 2 important scene ended less than 5 minutes !! Very disappointing. The fighting scene at the end is so messy, unclear and lost.

5. However, the beginning scenes are very good and surprising. The "mug dance" performed during the song "Gaston" is nicely plan and organized. The starting scene in the market for the song "bonjour" is also good.

6. Too bad that both Belle & Beast vocal doesnt attract me much. Thier voices are not outstanding at all.

7. However, the rest of the casts have great performance especially Gaston, following by candle, cupboard, broom & etc. The songs such as "bonjour", "be our guest", "gaston", "kill the beast" are greatly performed.

8. I especially like Gaston as his voice is strong and outstanding, his performance is attractive, with his flexible body.. the dances are marvelous.

TO THE ORGANIZER
1. The organizer is quite a failure, the tickets can't be purchase online, phone lines are engaged all the time, the box office counter only opens AFTER the 1st show is started.

2. The late comers should not be allowed to enter the hall once the musical is started. The error has happened at the beginning and after the break.

3. There is no one guarding the hall, ppl taking photos with flash frequently and no action was taken!

The musical is spectacular. The cutleries cabaret show is enchanting.

I love everything during the show except the late comers and the smelly smokes from the smoke machine. Need fresh air during the intermission.
