Valentine's Day is that one day of the year when people get googly-eyed and start talking about things like love, romance, and all that. But not all of us will have someone to squeeze, come Valentine's Day. This list, co-curated with our colleagues, friends and even Khairy Jamaluddin, is to help you wallow in your misery for a bit.

1. Michael Bolton - How Am I Supposed To Live Without You (as suggested by our Marketing Director, Joleyn Chin)

Tell me how am I supposed to live without you now that I've been lovin' you so long? How am I supposed to live without you? How am I supposed to carry on when all that I've been livin' for is gone.

Joleyn also suggested: Michael Bolton's Said I Love You But I Lied and Rod Stewart's First Cut Is The Deepest.

~

2. James Blunt - Goodbye My Lover (as suggested by our colleague, Jia Wei)

Goodbye my lover. Goodbye my friend. You have been the one. You have been the one for me.

~

3. My Chemical Romance - I Don't Love You (as suggested by Karen, from Tongue in Chic)

Where’d you go? And would you even turn to say, I don’t love you, like I did yesterday.

~

4. Aerosmith - Cryin' (as suggested by our New Media Director, Paolo)

I was cryin' when I met you. Now I'm tryin' to forget you.

~

5. Flight of The Conchords - I'm Not Crying (as suggested by Zedeck and Sarah)

These aren't tears of sadness because you're leaving me... I've just been cutting onions. I'm making a lasagna... for one.

~

6. Aqualung - Strange and Beautiful (as suggested by Didi from the New Media team!)

And when I wake you I'll be the first thing you see and you'll realise that you love me.

~

7. R.E.M. - Everybody Hurts

When the day is long and the night, the night is yours alone, when you're sure you've had enough of this life, well hang on. Don't let yourself go, everybody cries and everybody hurts sometimes.

~

8. The Get Up Kids - Valentine (as suggested by Fikri Fadzil from The Wknd)

Will you be my valentine if I'm a world away?

~

9. Allure feat. 112 - All Cried Out

I gave you my love in vain. My body never knew such pleasure, my heart never knew such pain.

~

10. 30 Seconds to Mars - The Kill (as suggested by Claudia Low)

Come break me down. Bury me, bury me. I am finished with you.

~

11. Toni Braxton - Un-break My Heart

Un-break my heart. Say you'll love me again. Un-do this hurt you caused when you walked out the door and walked outta my life. Un-cry these tears... I cried so many nights. Un-break my heart, my heart.

~

12. Colin Hay Band - I Just Don't Think I'll Ever Get Over You (as suggested by Fuad of Kyoto Protocol)

If I lived til I was a hundred and two I just don't think I'll ever get over you.

~

13. Leann Rimes - How Do I Live Without You

How do I breathe without you if you ever go. How do I ever, ever survive.

~

14. No Doubt - Don't Speak

Don't speak I know just what you're saying. So please stop explaining. Don't tell me cause it hurts.

~

15. Celine Dion - All By Myself

All by myself. Don't wanna be. All by myself.... anymore.

~

16. Billie Holiday - Gloomy Sunday (as suggested by singer-songwriter Jerome Kugan!)

Gloomy is sunday, with shadows I spend it all. My heart and I have decided to end it all.

"... since Valentine's Day this year falls on Sunday. It's also known as the Hungarian suicide song," says Jerome.

~

17. Taking Back Sunday - Cut Me Up Jenny (as suggested by Junk writer, Scott)

Give me all those gory details, Do tell, do tell. So cut me up, Jenny, Well, cut me up gently.

I'm losing you, I'm losing you
Trust me on this one
I've got a bad feeling,
Trust me on this one
You're gonna throw it all away
With no hesitation

(Smash)

The Moment I Said It by Imogen Heap.

Heck, in fact, most Imogen songs are horribly depressing.

You left out the perfect one: "Love Love, Kiss Kiss" by Alkaline Trio --

"Do you find you like to fall in love with people that you're never going to meet/ It's easier than breaking up and crying in the street/ Do you curse the happy couple/ Do you cringe at wedding bells/ Do you drink up all the punch/ While you wish 'em all to hell!

Love love, kiss kiss/ Blah Blah Blah/ You're Making me sick/ I wish you'd just stop/ Showing off for the rest of us that no one want's to love/ It's hard enough/ Trying to drink another winter all alone/ Love love, kiss kiss/ Blah, blah blah.

"A Case of You" by Prince:

I'm a lonely painter
I live in a box of paints
I used to b frightened by the deviland drawn to those who weren't afraid
Remember when you told me that love was touching souls?
Well, surely u touching mine
Part of u pours out of me from time to time in these lines
You're in my blood like holy wine... you're so bitter and so sweet I could drink a case of u darling and still on my feet... still be on my feet

Let me add one more too!

Human by The Killers.

Pay my respects to grace and virtue
Send my condolences to good
Give my regards to soul and romance,
They always did the best they could
And so long to devotion
You taught me everything I know
Wave goodbye
Wish me well..
You've gotta let me go

"to slash your wrists"

Are you promoting one?

Or are you a bunch of short-minded who is lack of sensitivity towards some beliefs which opposing the act of suicide?

Or are you just a metaphorically funny person yourself?

Freedom of speech is nice but if you have nothing constructive to say, why say anything at all?

Er, zaki; it's a popular phrase in pop culture? Freedom of speech means having an open enough mind to hear opinions that you may not necessarily agree with. Doesn't mean you need to reassess your world view - but do understand that your opinion is treated with respect too.

Popular phrase in pop culture? You gotta be kidding me. Not in my concern one should slit theirs on Valentine's day. Is it really necessary to do so? I don't think it is. So, you probably referring to the other pop culture that I'm not keen with... perhaps the destructive ones.

"Freedom of speech means having an open enough mind to hear opinions that you may not necessarily agree with."

By saying that, probably you'll be having 'an open enough mind' to hear (or don't mind?) about any opinion that contains offensive in nature; racism for the example?

Stretch a little bit of your sensitivity towards some beliefs, will you?

chi too's choice (#18) makes me want to slit my throat. perfect choice. kudos.
careless whisper by you know who.

I totally agree with Zaki. He is like a prophet, speaking truth in this wilderness of sin that is the modern age. You guys are not only promoting suicide - which is disgusting because life is sacred; only God and religious leaders can take it away - but Valentine's Day: a heathen and despicable festival created by those evil Catholics to force our youth to go without underwear and become perverts!!!

"Stretch a little bit of your sensitivity towards some beliefs, will you?"

You are so right, Zaki!!! If anyone here disputes Malay rights I will be very, very ANGRY!!!

how did a discussion about valentine's songs suddenly turn into a discussion about Malay rights?!

Default_user
Posted by mimi on 22 February

hey, zaki + god's servant, I'm willing to hear all manner of discussion/opinion but right now, I don't believe anything good will come out of what has turned into an unnecessarily inflammatory discussion.

Jason Lim,

Please let my comment alone/stand by itself; which means don't misunderstood my intention and put me in the same league of God's Servant's comment. Okay?

He/she got his/her own. I have mine. And put me away of any races' right whatsoever as I believe individuality and the sensitivity of others' belief that needs to be aware of.

"what has turned into an unnecessarily inflammatory discussion."

Are you referring to me? On which part my comment is 'unnecessarily inflammatory'? You tell me?

You didn't answer my question properly in the first place...

"Slashing wrists on Valentine's day is a popular phrase in pop culture?"

...yet you create another blurry thought/accusation towards me? What are you trying to say here anyway? Focus on the main subject besides twisting it as a form of accusation, will you?

Hello Zaki:

Just to clarify, because I don't think that you've made yourself clear throughout this entire thread:

Are you opposed to the act of suicide?

Why are you opposed to it? According to what creed/moral code?

Who then, according to your principles, is allowed to take lives?

Do you think that employing the phrase "slash your wrists to" in a blog post on KLue will encourage young, confused youth to off themselves?

How so? Outline your logical process, please.

Thanks!
