The Lovely Bones
The Lovely Bones is a film adaptation of the book by Alice Sebold, written and published in 2002. This movie features an all-star line-up, with the Academy-award winning director Peter Jackson leading the team.
The story is about Susie Salmon, played by Saoirse (pronounced seer-shuh) Ronan (whom we may recognise from the film adaptation of Atonement), who is unwittingly raped and murdered by a serial killer of young women and girls, who happens to be her neighbour (Stanley Tucci). Her soul then watches, in a limbo-sort-of-place, as the world carries on without her. Her parents, Jack and Abigail (played by Mark Wahlberg and Rachel Weisz respectively) mourn the loss of their daughter while veteran actress Susan Sarandon plays the role of Susie’s grandmother.Susie has the burning desire (don’t we all) to take revenge, and she is horrified to learn that her killer has decided to strike again, since he got away scot-free with her murder, but it also pains her to see her family deal with her death.
Overall, this film is sentimental, touching to the heart as we watch Susie being helpless and well, dead. New Zealand-born Peter Jackson is known for his cinematography style, which captures beautiful scenes as we’ve all seen in the remake of King Kong, and The Lord of the Rings, which earned him his award.
