The 2nd Seven Years: Quilt of the Dead, Flora & Fauna IV, Narratives Preview

Sunday, 01/11/09 - 21:55PM Filed in The Arts by sarah | Views: 1493 | Comments: 0

The title of visual artist Chang Yoong Chia’s latest solo exhibition reflects the guy’s practice: chock-full of stuff. His work betrays an obsessive-compulsive’s need to accumulate and cram. But this visual busy-ness is what makes his work startlingly beautiful, in the same way an illuminated page from medieval times might be. In his 2006 Rimbun Dahan exhibition, “The Final Voyage of C.Y.C” was a seashell a mere 5cm across – yet it was a miniature painted world of stormy seas, in which a dead, gossamer-wrapped bug was making its ultimate journey.

Death is one of Chang’s obsessions. He began “Quilt of the Dead” in 2003; the next year, he was seen still working on this work, sewing faces taken from obituary pages even as the events of Urbanscapes 2004 roared around him. The current show will showcase Chang’s work from that period, till the present day, exploring themes of memory, imagination and history.

What do you wish you had more of as a child?
Pocket money! I used to get only 20sen back in school.
Respect from my parents. I am my own person!
I wish my parents listened to me, instead of keeping to the idea that "children should be seen and not heard"
Attention! My siblings took it away from me. Grrr!
Freedom. My parents never let me go out with my friends.
Brand new clothes, not hand-me-downs that were ill-fitting!
Maturity to impress and annoy the adults with.
Time! Everything happened so quickly and I miss those carefree days.
Toys, gadgets and the latest computer games, because we kids were competitive about things like that.
I certainly wish I heard less of the phrase, "When I was your age..."
