Aerosol Art
Not to be confused with the boxing legend, Mohammed Ali is a UK graffiti artist who has won an Arts Council Diversity Award for his work. Fusing graffiti art with Arabic script, Mohammed’s work challenges social consciousness and the negative perception of Islam. In Melbourne, he made a mural on saving water based on the Hadith. In Chicago, Mohammed began a mural but was asked by the local firemen to stop. (Arabic script reminded them of September 11.) He decorated the walls of his native Birmingham after the conflict in Gaza ignited earlier this year.
Mohammed makes his Malaysian debut from 5–8 July at the Knowledge & Arts Tour 2009. Organised by the Young Muslims Project, Mohammed will work with local graffiti group Phobiaklik to create a public mural on 7 and 8 July at Kompleks Rakan Muda Bukit Kiara from 10am to 6pm.
