Heineken Music presents Impulse: A Junk Music Project (June)
Losing the impulse? Reacquaint yourself when the next Heineken Music presents Impulse: A Junk Music Project rolls around in June. The previous one at Blanc Le Club in April was a smashing success with featured acts Popcon, Jonvu, Supercashew and visual masters Kraftgrafik and Singapore's QWERTY VISUALS. In the tradition of Impulse, the coming one will bring you the best of both music and visuals in the region.
The spotlight falls on the Philippines in June. Headlining is the trio, Techy Romantics. The Pinoy act's sound is aptly summed up in their name. Ryan Villena (guitars), Dondi Virrey (beats, keys and programming) and Camyl Besinga (vocals) make electronica music that is sweeping, surreal, and of course, romantic. Citing influences like The Cure, New Order and The Cardigans, Techy Romantics admits that their music is best experienced on a lazy Sunday afternoon. Signed to Party Bear Records—the same label as Junksounds Regional Music Award-winning band Taken By Cars—Techy Romantics hits KL with the sole mission of winning us over.
With the band taking over the live stage, the DJ console will be dominated by two DJs—Paco aka BananaRepublic and Gaijin. Paco, a graduate from the Royale DJ Academy, brings with him a set packed with minimal electro and house. Gaijin, recently crowned champion of the Pioneer Digital DJ Battle 2008, is also a graduate from the Royale DJ Academy—expect deep house, tech house and techno from this rising star.
The night would not be complete without eye candy. The very experienced and talented Danny Hoo from Insight Visuals will be there to run wild our imaginations. His presence has been seen at diverse events and shows like the MVA Awards 2004, Freedom Merdeka Party and Puteri Gunung Leading: The Musical! We can't wait to see what he has up his sleeve for Impulse.
But that's not all: joining Danny in the visuals arena is Alwyn Chua. A fashion designer who was a finalist on Project Runway: Malaysia, Alwyn marks an unconventional addition to the Impulse alum. What he will do exactly is still a mystery but our curiousity is piqued. Guess we'll have to find out at the next Impulse with everyone else. See you there!
