It’s Oh So Quiet

Thursday, 30/04/09 - 11:11AM Filed in The Arts by maybritt | Views: 395 | Comments: 0

Yes, the Internet is stealing our souls. But it’s also making it easier than ever to find new stories. Welcome to SomeplaceQuiet. Named after the places we look to do reading, SomeplaceQuiet is a new website dedicated to producing free e-books. These aren't your normal e-books, these aren't digital versions of printed books. SomeplaceQuiet’s e-books are original short stories—mostly about life experiences—peppered with music, comics and short films.

The project was initially meant for friends but when the first e-book A Paperbag of Dreams debuted in February, the response from both friends and strangers was far greater than expected. SomeplaceQuiet hasn’t looked back since. “Our readers are not merely commenting on our work but they share their life experiences and thoughts with us after reading our stories,” says Wei Xiang, the Producer.

Updated monthly, SomeplaceQuiet is managed by a team of five young people—Wei Xiang, HP, Vico, Mika and Jia Long—who share the same interest in art and storytelling. “None of us are doing anything related to art in real life. So SomeplaceQuiet is like our only opportunity to do something we’ve always wanted,” explains Wei Xiang.

At the moment the e-books are in Chinese but SomeplaceQuiet are working hard on translating their works into English. To check out the e-books, log on to www.someplacequiet.com.

What do you wish you had more of as a child?
Pocket money! I used to get only 20sen back in school.
Respect from my parents. I am my own person!
I wish my parents listened to me, instead of keeping to the idea that "children should be seen and not heard"
Attention! My siblings took it away from me. Grrr!
Freedom. My parents never let me go out with my friends.
Brand new clothes, not hand-me-downs that were ill-fitting!
Maturity to impress and annoy the adults with.
Time! Everything happened so quickly and I miss those carefree days.
Toys, gadgets and the latest computer games, because we kids were competitive about things like that.
I certainly wish I heard less of the phrase, "When I was your age..."
