The Valley Girl: Silent Sadness

I was at the office when I heard of the news that popular blogger and Malaysia Today website owner, Raja Petra Kamaruddin, otherwise known as RPK, had been detained under the ISA.

Posted on 09 October 2008There's a Malay adage that goes, “Gajah lawan Gajah, Kancil mati ditengah-tengah.” I couldn't think of a more apt time to use it than now. Seven months after the 12th General Elections, Malaysia and Malaysians are still fixated at the politicking and powerplays of the people's elected 'gods', or 'dewarajas' in our Southeast Asian cultural context. But it hasn't been a boring seven months, I would have to concede.
Community Board: Malaysian Music Is Dangerous
Posted on 09 October 2008A local gig in Kelantan got raided, a pub band in Holiday Inn over in Glenmarie had trouble with some overzealous officials, and a few foreign musicians almost got banned for silly reasons (with the exception of Inul Daratista who successfully got banned). Over in Kedah, they are upping this whole thing by totally keeping all pop, reggae and rock music out of the state.
