I could write a cheese-filled, gush-dripping, bathetic salute to Klang Valley. But I will not. All valley folks have their own reasons why they love this place, and I'm sure I would echo similar ones. So we all love Nasi Lemak Antarabangsa, the fun and funky people around town, and we all fancy the pants off our 'multicultural diversity.'

Discovering that other people don't see you as you see yourself is like hearing your recorded voice played back to you for the very first time - it's shocking, ugly and totally unfamiliar. It’s amazing how powerful a self-constructed image is. If only self-image was impenetrable. If only one could merge the idea of image into one that is satisfying to both yourself and to the outside world looking at you. Which begs the questions: is how others see you just as or more important as how you imagine yourself? If so, how do you even construct an image of yourself, or in fact, an identity?

As Malaysians try to recover from the shock of the recent petrol price escalation, the government mouthpieces have acted swiftly – albeit cumbersome still – to dispel further deterioration of sentiments: calls for the public to “change your lifestyle”; remarks from the Ministry of Tourism for more “local tourism” that doesn't require you to travel too far; and further claims by the Badawi administration that there will be no further price hikes until next year.

By some stroke of genius, I filled up my tank the night before the fuel prices went up. The next day, on the way to an event, traffic jams of epic proportions abounded in our fair city. For those of you tucked away from the madness, it looked like a Spielberg-esque, War of the Worlds. Aliens coming, get gas, flee!
